HOPEWELL VA: The Association of Sikh Professionals is pleased to announce the results of their Junior Achievement Prize competition; The Association had invited any youngster in USA who had written a paper on any Sikh issue to submit it for judging. These could be papers that had been prepared as college or school term papers. Any paper dealing with Sikh culture, religion, history, ethics or with the Punjabi language was eligible for consideration. The judging was done by a panel of three judges who were not members of the Association of Sikh Professionals. All entries were supplied to the judges “incognito” i.e. the judges were not aware of who the author was. The results were as follows:

First Prize: Mr. Ravinder Singh Bhalla, age 20, of Pine Brook NJ. His subject was “Manifestations & Implications of Sikh Humor in Sikh & Indian Societies.” Mr Bhalla will receive a check of $500 from the ASP.

There were two Runners up: Rooptaz Singh Sibia, age 20, of Boca Raton FL (Subject:” Religious Issues in Death & Dying”). 2. Umang Kaur Soin, age 21, of Baltimore MD (Her subject was “Sikh Identity in the Demand for a new State”), they will receive a check for $250 each.

Two Consolation Prizes were awarded: 1.Navneet K.Matta, age 19, of Gaithersburg MD (Subject;” Sikh Rehat Maryada™), 2.Ravneet Singh, age 21, of Aurora IL (His subject was “The Guru, Guru Gobind Singh. Both will receive a check for $100 each.

The Association of Sikh Professionals wishes to thank the Dalbir Singh Memorial Trust for helping in this effort. We also wish to thank those who helped in the judging and collating of the results.

This competition will be an annual event and any youth who wishes to participate may submit their entry to P.O. Box 140, Hopewell VA 23860. Entrants must be under 25 years of age and all manuscripts must be received by June 20, 1994.
