BEIJING: Pakistan routed defending champions South Korea 50 to sail to top of the men’s hockey league competition at the Asian games.

This was South Korea’s first defeat. They beat Hong Kong 80 and Japan 20 in matches.

Assured of a medal

The Indian tennis squad assured themselves of a medal when they thrashed North Korea 30 in the quarterfinals to qualify for the semifinals at the 11th Asian games here.

National champion Zeeshan Ali took the lead by beating Chol Nam Kim in straight sets 6-1, 6-1 in the opening singles. Rohit Rajpal clinched the issue for India by winning the second singles against Li Chol 6-2, 6-1,

The doubles pair of Zeeshan Ali and Leander Paes completed the rout with another straight sets victory in the doubles ‘over Chol Nam Kim and Li Chol.

Zeeshan Ali set the pace at the international tennis courts here with an authoritative victory over the Korean number one in just 30 minutes, Kim Chol Nam was caught on the wrong foot time and again by the delicate play of the Indian national champion. Ali broke his opponent thrice in the first set and twice in the second to emerge an easy victor.

Looks for a job

‘The very thought of a jobless future may have driven Chaya Adak to the victory podium.

Sailors bring home two bronze medals

BEIJING: Indian Yachtsmen bagged two bronze medals though Homi Motivala and Push pendra Garg were unlucky to miss the silver by a whisker at Qinhuangdao to take India’s overall medal tally in the Asian games to 16.

Even as other Indian competition failed to rise above levels of mediocrity, the enterprise class sailors, Motivala and Garg, finished a dismal seventh in the last race of the Regatta to get the bronze 0 01 penalties behind a Japanese pair.
