SRINAGAR: The Chief of the Army Staff, General Shanker Roy Chowdhry, met the Jammu and Kashmir Governor, K.V.Krishna Rao, here last week, and reviewed the security situation in the state, especially in the Valley.

Gen; Chowdhry and Gen, (retd) Rao also reviewed the steps being taken to improve the situation, with a view to prepare for elections in the state, according to official sources,

They discussed the situation arising at of the burning of the Chrar-e-Sharief shrine and town during the hour-long meeting. Antimilitary operations were also discussed. Earlier. Gen Chowdhry, was briefed by senior Army officers about the overall situation in the Valley. Life remained crippled in the Kashmir Valley due to as spontaneous bandh even as authorities lifted curfew in Baramulla and Srinagar except in downtown,

About 30 incidents of arson and demonstration were reported from the valley last week. Meanwhile, three companies of Central Reserve Police force (CRPF) and Jammu and Kashmir police have taken control of the ChrareSharief town after Army withdrew from there

Authorities lifted the day curfew in Baramulla and Srinagar city, despite incidents of arson and demonstration at many places, However, curfew was relaxed for only 10 hours from 5.a.m, in the entire downtown city.

People took to streets at Maisuma near here and burnt tires Security forces and police had been deployed in strength at Maisuma and in the entire Srinagar city to prevent people to take out processions, Police lobbed tear gas shells and used lathis to disperse the mob.

Government building and houses of the migrants was the main target of the agitated mobs who were protesting against the burning down of the shrine,

The curfew in Bhaderwah town of Doda district continued for a second day.

The curfew was imposed last week following tension over the attack on a religious place causing injuries to the priest of the temple, a young girl and a CRPF jawan.
