NEW DELHI: The Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister, Mr. Arjan Singh has been asked by the Central working committee of Congress (I) to step down in the light of the High Court judgment in Chuthat Lottery case.

The State Legislature party of the Congress (I) will meet in Bhopal on Monday to elect a new leader. The CWC met here on Sunday for two hours to review the situation arising out of the High court judgment. Mr. Arjan Singh attended the meeting in his capacity as a member of the working committee. Making a brief announcement about the decision of the CWC, the AICC General Secretary Mr. Gulam Nabi Azad said the State government has been asked to institute the enquiry into the Churhat lottery scandal with which Arjan Singh’s son and his other relations are involved. While ordering an enquiry the High Court had indicated the state government for arbitrariness and malafide influence in condoning the default by Arjan Singh’s relations.

Arjan Singh, it may be recalled. was instrumental in bringing about RajivLongowal accord. As Governor of Punjab, he had manipulated Barnala and Balwant Singh who persuaded Longowal to accept to accord despite general ‘opposition by the Sikhs.
