AMRITSAR: Amritsar, the border city of northern state of Punjab will be on the international air map from next month with the introduction of a direct flight from the city to the United Kingdom.

Air India’s domestic flights would provide links to this flight, the deputy commissioner, Mr. Sarabjeet Singh, told PTI here.

For the time being the Indian Airlines flight will be once in a week.

This will be for the second time that the Rajasansi airport here is being brought on the international air map. A direct flight was introduced to Birmingham via Moscow in January 1982 but it was discontinued in the wake of disturbed ‘conditions in Punjab.

Official sources said the decision to upgrade the airport was taken in the wake of the prime minister Mr V P Singh’s announcement in Amritsar district in August.
