Chandigarh, India — “No comets are seen when beggars die; Heavens themselves flash forth the death of Princes” Shakespeare.
Union government has decided to amend the Provision of the Representation of Peoples Act in Punjab for coming elections. It has been done to counter the threats in Punjab for the coming election. By this ordinance the provision of countermanding poll in a constituency where an independent candidate dies has been revoked. Poll will be countermanded only when a candidate belonging to a recognized party dies.
The amendment has no retrospective operation. It will not affect cases and the polls that have already been countermanded. Official sources say that amendment will ensure adequate protection for candidates of the main political parties and help in eliminating threat to independent candidates whose number has been growing in recent years.
