AMRITSAR, Punjab, India: “While reporting yet another escape of Bhai Manbir Singh of Cheheru who was considered as “A” category of freedom fighter by the police. The police said that the manhunt had been launched in the Beas River belt. According to the Police General, Hari Singh, alias Manbir Singh was being brought from Amritsar to Jullundur for his court appearance. But hne escaped near Beas under the pretext of answering the call of nature. The escort party had at least four officers of S.P.’s rank.

According to a police source, case of escape has been registered against him at police station Vairowal, district of Amritsar.

Manbir Singh was arrested at an army officer’s house at Jullundur on August 9, 1987, and it was considered a prize catch.

When D..G. Jullundur, Mr. ‘AA, Sidiqui was contacted on phone by the pressmen, he told said that a suitable action will be taken against the defaulting officers who were held responsible for his escape.

The D.LG. said that Manbir ‘Singh was detained in Hazaribagh Jail of Bihar from where he was being brought to Jullundur for court appearance.

Meanwhile, ALSS.F. (Gurjit) has alleged that General Hari Singh has been killed in yet another fake encounter and cooked story of his escape was being manipulated to cover up their misdeed in the same manner as was done in the cases of Kartar Singh Pehlwan, Roshan Lal Bairagi and Maniit Singh Bhitti.
