NEW DELHI (PTI):The super cop credited with bringing peace to Punjab K. P. S. Gill who was recently elected president of the Indian hockey federation was served notice by the Delhi police seeking identity of the persons who allegedly assaulted two scribes at his Press conference here on July 1 .
Two sports journalists from the Daily “The Statesman” Rahul Banejee and Abhijit Das had alleged that supporters of Gill elected the president on June 30 bashed them up at the conference in a Five-Star hotel.
Police said it had started investigations into the case and has registered a first information report on Saturday against “Supporters of Mr Gill following complaints by the journalists under various sections of the Indian penal code including punishment for voluntarily causing grievous hurt.
The Statesman meanwhile demanded immediate suspension of K. P. S. Gill und several of his officials
In whether to federal home ministers S B. Chavan the English Daily said the assault was provoked by questions put by its deputy sports editor Banerjee and his colleague Abhijit Das to Gill.
The newspaper charged that the Punjab police personnel had acted on the instigation and instructions of their senior officers and that the assault had begun in the presence of several senior officers of Punjab police including Gill.
The statesman’s news Editor Ravindra Kumar demanded the arrest of all police officers and policemen involved in the assault. Hockey Federation Vice President quits his post BHOPAL(PTI):Congress-I deputy Gufran-E-Azamon July 3 resigned from the Vice president ship of the Indian Hockey Federation (THF) in protest against the assault on two journalists at New Delhi allegedly by supporters of new IHF president K PS Gill.
Addressing a Press conference at his residence here Gufran said he had sent his resignation by telegram to Gill who is also the director-general of the Punjab police.
In his telegram Gufran said “this criminal act of assaulting press people has ruined the image of THF”
Gufran said he had resigned from the post as it was just not possible for him to continue in an organization whose head failed to do anything to prevent two journalists from being beaten up in his presence.
