NEW DELHI: Intense strategic sessions by the ruling party have not been able to give the Government a clue about how to avoid discomfiture in the monsoon session of Parliament beginning Monday. The only remedy that the Government has thought is to make suo moto Statements on the current controversies. The statements are expected on the barbarous tandoor murder, the death of biscuit tycoon Rajan Pillai in police custody, Jammu bomb blasts ‘and the Doordarshan CNN tie up. The feeling in the North Block is that the filing of the charge sheet in the tandoor murder case will put the Government ‘on a somewhat better wicket indicating its resolve to take swift action against the culprits.
These tactics may not succeed, going by the mood of opposition parties. ‘The tandoor murder case is likely to generate a debate on the politician criminal nexus, The notices for adjournment motions on this subject are Teamed to have already been given by Indrajit Gupta (CPI), Ms, Geeta Mukherjee (CPIM), Atal Behari Vajpayee, L.K. Advani and Jaswant Singh (Bharatiya Janata Party). The National Front Left Front combine met and reiterated its stand on the subject. The meeting was attended, among others, by Sharad Yadav, Jaipal Reddy and Ramvilas Paswan (Janata Dal), M.A. Baby (CPIM), Indrajit Gupta and Chaturnan Mishra (CPI), Chita Basu (Forward Block) and Piyush Tirkey (Revolutionary Socialist Party). The discussion on the political and criminal nexus is certain to include a demand for the presentation in Parliament the report of the Vohra committee which was set up to look into the politician criminal nexus following Bombay bomb blasts.
The issue also came up for discussion at the customary eve of the session luncheon meeting at which the ‘Speaker, Shivraj Patil, and the Prime Minister, P.V. Narasimha Rao, were present.
