AMRITSAR: Plans to bring about unity of Akali groups started at the instance of acting Akal Takhat Jathedar Prof, Manjit Singh Slanted on a promising note early this week when the Jathedar along with four other Takhat chiefs heard several group leaders.
Significantly, no leader of the Badal group met the Jathiedars on the ground that Badal had resigned as chief of the Badal Dal and a five member presidium appointed in his place had “Suspended” all political activity. It is obvious that the Badal faction it’s opposed to the intervention of Jathedars in the political feuds of the Akali groups.
Most of those who met the Takhat jathedars pledged their support to their unity efforts and offered to work as ordinary workers in a new political set up. Evidently, the Jathedars are slow to go whole hog in devising a unified Akali Dal in view of widespread criticism in political circles of the Jathedar’s political activism. Prof Manjit Singh said that the Jathedars were keen on providing the Akali groups a forum while the details of any set up has to be worked out by the participants themselves.
