NEW ORLEANS: Our Human Rights meeting on the first day of the Conference was the largest and best attended of the day.

We started on time with the important subject “Lawyers Detained Worldwide” with distinguished speakers and commentators. The unanimous resolution passed at the meeting reads as follows: “The International Bar Association at its New Orleans Conference in October 1993 through the medium of its Section on General Practice Human Rights Committee resolved to bring to the attention of the governments involved its concern regarding the detention of lawyer denying from representation of an unpopular chant. The IBA whilst aware of the many problems faced by governments in different countries never the less abhors this breach of international human rights law which strikes at the very fundamentals of democracy and democratic mule. The IBA supports the principle of absolute freedom at all times for lawyers properly to engage in defending clients in all circumstances The IBA further points Out that it ill becomes governments to ignore this basic principle of International law and it urges those responsible to release the lawyers concemed forthwith.”

The list of lawyers detained will be updated and tabled again in Melbourne at the Biennial Conference from 9-14 October this year if any readers have names to add or better still to delete they should please let me know
