SRINAGAR: Prominent Kashmiri leader Qazi Nisar Ahmad popularly known as the Mirwaiz of south Kashmir was murdered by militants in Anantnag town on June 20 and one of hte killers has been identified as Faiz Miralias Abu Baker platoon com mander of Hizbul Mujahidin.

A large procession was taken out in Anantnag in protest against the killing of Qazi Nissar Ahmed. An official spokesman said between 75000 and one lakh people poured into the streets on Monday morning after the news of Qazi Nisars murder spread in the district town

The spokesman said that Qazi Nisar spearheaded the Muslim United Front Movement to pose a formidable challenge to National Conference in 1987 assembly elections.

Qazi Nisar 42 was abducted by militants from his house on Sunday night an official spokesman said adding his body was later found in village Bonidayalgam.

Qazi Nisar is the fourth prominent person to have been killed by militants since 1990 The others include Mirwaiz Maulvi Mohammad Farooq Mirwaiz of Kashmir and president of the Awami Action committee and Abdul Ahad Guroo an eminent cardiologist.

An eminent Islamic scholar with a doctorate in Arabic from Aligarh Muslim University Qazi Nisar 42 had authored several religious books.

He shot into prominence when he played a key role in an antiliquor agitation led by Peoples League Chief Shabbir Ahmad Shah in Anantnag in the early 80s.
