SACRAMENTO: Sharon Singh, an aide to Congressman Vie Fazio, has announced that she will be moving to Washington, D.C. in the middle of April to work for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC), which Congressman Fazio chairs, Congressman Fazio, as Vice Chairman of the Democratic Caucus, holds the number five leadership position in the House, Fazio is recognized by the National Journal as one of the most influential leaders in the House of Representatives
The DECC is the national party organization whose objective is “to promote, aid, and encourage the election of Democratic candidates to the United Sues House of Representatives,” The DCCC provides fund raising assistance and direct contributions to Democratic congressional candidates, wherever possible, in general election campaigns. The DCCC also provides campaign services to candidates and their campaigns from the following divisions: Political; Research; Press; Fundraising: Political Action Committee; and the Harriman Communications Center.
Singh will be working in the Political division, mainly working with the tracking of candidates in the general 1994 cycle. Because of her numerous event-planning and fundraising activities, she will also assist in those and other political areas, Singh, with her astute political and artistic talents, is known in Democratic circles as an extremely competent political staffer.
Singh, who is single, graduated from University of California, Davis majoring in Rhetoric/Communications and Art Studio. Africa belief stint as a kindergarten teacher, she began her political career as the first person of Indian descent to become a Jesse Marvin Unruh Assembly Fellow. Her assignments included working as a legislative aide to Assemblyman Phil Isenberg and as an associate transportation consultant to the Assembly Ways and Means Committee, chaired by Assemblyman John Violoncellos.
She was recruited by Lon Hatamiya to be the scheduler and field director for his 1990 campaign for Assembly. Hatamiya was recently appointed as Administrator of the Food Marketing Program for the United States Department of Agriculture by President Clinton. She began to work for Congressman Fazio in 1991, and since then has assumed a variety of responsibilities ranging from serving as a distinct press aide to organizing vents and meetings for Congressman Fazio and Cabinet Members. Singh has also advanced for the President during his trips to Northern California. She was part of his press advance team during the Asian Pacific Economic Cooperation meetings in Seattle Last November.
Singh has worked hard to maintain a strong, friendly and open relationship with her own Sikh community. “I am always available to listen and assist because | believe it is very important for our community to be involved in politics; be it local, state, or national. My goal has been and is to brief the congressman and others on views of the entire Sikh community and yes, sometimes they do differ,” stated Singh in a recent interview.
“As an American, my goal is to make my community a safer and healthier place to live. That
includes working for a greener environment, equal pay for equal work, shattering glass ceilings, protecting a woman’s right to choose, and an cod to domestic violence, My strong Sikh spiritual values give me the courage, the dedication, and the persistence to accomplish these and other goals.” “My dad came to the United States from the Fiji Islands in the late 1950’S to create better opportunities for him and his family, and 1am inspired by my mom and dad to continue to bring that hope to others,” Singh added.
Singh is the eldest child of longtime residents and community leaders, Sarvan and Gayan K. Singh, of Williams California. She has a sister, Sheri, and two brothers, Sarvan Jr and Sajit, Sheri is the assistant marketing director for SCA in Seattle. Washington and is married to Matt Siegel a computer software engineer for Microsoft. Sarvan Jr, is a senior at San Francisco Suite University majoring in political science, with w strong emphasis on international politics. Sajit is attending Yuba College focusing on geology and other natural sciences. He is the bass guitarist and drummer of the local modern rock hand.

Singh is currently the Secretary of the Women’s Caucus of the California Democratic Party, and an executive member of the Eleanor Roosevelt Fund, which helps fund California state female candidates, She is viewed as a young leader in the Asian Pacific American (APA) community by her peers through her many different projects which benefit the APA population.
Though her career and political activities are very demanding on her time, she does try to continue to work on her art. She is known for her large abstract paintings using charcoal and acrylic as her main mediums. She enjoys and is inspired by such artists as Gerald Richter. Helen Frankenthaler, and Julian Schnabel, She also dabbles in clay sculpture. Many, who know her, rave of her gourmet culinary talents, which she has acquired from her father.
Singh asserts that she does not plan to run for office, preferring to help mold and develop future leaders, whatever her future endeavors are, she is clearly a rising star. Her abilities and dedication epitomize the strong attributes needed in our future leaders.
