SRINAGAR: The All-Party Hurriyat Conference an umbrella forum of 27 organizations last week set up a two-member committee to go into infighting among the militant outfits in the Valley and appealed to them to agree to a ceasefire.

The committee was set up by the Hurriyat leaders at a mammoth congregation at Jamia Masjid here.

The meeting was convened to observe the death anniversaries of so-called first commander-in-chief of the banned Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) Ashfaq Majid Wani who was killed in an encounter with the security forces on March 30 1990 and Dr. Abdul Ahad Guroo an eminent cardiologist who was killed by unidentified militants on April 1 last year.

The committee members Pir Hafizullah Maqdoomi and Ghulam Rasool Wani executive members of Hurriyat have been directed to get in touch with militant outfits involved in the infighting and try to remove misunderstanding among them a spokesman of the Conference told reporters here.

He said the members have also been authorized to announce appropriate punishment to those found involved in hostilities. The step comes even as militant organizations ignored the appeals of the Hurriyat to stop the infighting.

The Conference appealed to the militant outfits to agree to a ceasefire and stop issuing statements to the Press critical of each other.

The leaders advised the militant outfits not to take any action against their rivals but approach the Hurriyat Conference to settle disputes and remove misunderstandings.

The speakers include veteran political leader Maulvi Mohammad Abbas Ansari and Prof Abdul Gani both executive members of the Hurriyat Conference.
