NEW DELHI (PTI): Indias election commission last week warned four Indian states scheduled to face assembly elections this year-end that elections cannot be an excuse for non-compliance of directions for issue of identity cards to electors by the Noy.30 deadline this year
The commission hereby fore wars all the chief electoral officers concemed that every effort should be made to strictly adhere to the schedule for implementation of the scheme of issue of identity cards to electors in their states by Nov 30,1994. They should not allow any laxity to creep in commission secretary K.P.G Kutty said in a letter to the chief electoral officers of Andhra Pradesh Goa Karnataka and Sikkim
The letter said the commission would not accept any request for extension of time for competition of the work beyond the schedule nor would it countenance any delay in the completion of the scheme.
The commission clarified that its announcement of elections to be held before December 31 this year did not give any relaxation whatsoever to ceos to slacken or go slow on the program of identity cards issue before the deadline
The commission last week had announced that it would not incision the issue of identity cards in these states as a pre-requisite to notification of elections as these would be held before December 31 this year.
