CANADA: Metro politicians want to study the use of photo radar on local streets to counter what they say are crazed drivers who break traffic laws without fear of being caught.

Police enforcement is so poor that the offensive and dangerous drivers get away with breaking the law councilors complained at a meeting of the transportation committee of Metro.

And councilors said they wanted a report telling them if the new provincial photo radar system for highways could work on Metro roads

Starting in April the Ontario government plans a six-month trial of this controversial method of controlling speeds.

Cameras will photograph speeding drivers’ license plates on Highway 403 the QEW sections of Highway 401 through Metro and Highway40). In the Caledon area and the own or of the vehicle gets a notice of infraction in the mail.

This is despicable and reprehensible said Councilor Dennis Fotinos (Davenport) It’s an in vasion of privacy.

Fotinos said the Metro government has gone spy-happy. First a Proposal was made to fingerprint welfare recipients to counter welfare fraud and now this he said. Soon we’ll be the eyes and cars of Metro. Next thing we’ll be in the bedrooms and washrooms Transportation boss Doug Floyd said he is more concemed about the dangerous practice of running red lights and would rather sec a photo device installed at some intersections to catch culprits.
