NEW DELHI: The administration of justice in the Capital was adversely affected as the Delhi High Court and subordinate courts remained paralyzed several times in the past year with lawyers going on strike on various issues.
The legal fratemnity boycotted court proceedings in Delhi at an average of three days in a month on issues ranging from lack of civic amenities in the court premises to expression of solidarity with lawyers in the high courts of their states.
‘The lawyers of Tis Hazari district courts were on strike till the date last week to protest against some remarks made by a judge against the legal profession.
The number of cases currently pending in the Delhi High Court is 1, 38,482, according to a statement made in the Lok Sabha recently. Of them, 62,914 cases have been pending for more than five years.
Justice M. J. Rao, who recently took over as the Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court, has initiated several measures for early disposal of long pending cases, and early hearing of urgent matters. ‘The strength of judges in the Delhi High Court is now 25, and six vacancies are yet to be filled.
