CHANDIGARH: Union Home Minister $.B.Chavan has agreed to the delimitation of the constituencies of the Shiromant Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee to pave the way for its general house election.
Punjab Chief Minister Bent Singh told media persons here last week that he had personally delivered a letter to this effect to Chavan during his recent visit to the city. No time frame has been fixed for these purposes. The election for this mini Parliament of the Sikhs was last held in March 1979. All the Akali factions and the SGPC chief Gurcharan Singh Tohra have been demanding curly election.
Beant Singh made it clear that he was also keen for this election but he strongly favored delimitation of constituencies as the population had increased.
Commenting upon the Satluj Yamani link canal issue he said there was no move to present to initiate steps for the completion of this carrier channel. He said no directive had been received by the state government from Prime Minister P.V Narasimha Rao as claimed by his Haryana counterpur Bhajan Lal. He denied having discussed this issue with Bhajan Lal during the last four months. He said he favored its completion but would not like to enter into any controversy with Bhajan Lal on this issue.
The Chief Minister said the proposal to construct new township in periphery of Chandigarh was in its nascent stage. He said no permission was required from the Center to go ahead with the project which is being described as New Chandigarh He denied the move to reshuffle his cabinet.
Replying tow question about the implementation of one-man one post principle he said he would abide by the wishes of the party high command. Beant Singh also heads the Pradesh Congress.
