NEW DELHI (PTI): Former chief justice Rangnath Misra who heads the newly constituted national human rights commission last week said the commission would spare no efforts to prevent infringement of human rights by any authority and will go to the press if the government did not take action on its recommendations.

I can say with confidence that people can look up to this commission We will certainly not spare anyone justice Misra told a news conference his first since he took over as the commission chief in October.

The former Supreme Court judge made it clear that despite the body’s recommendatory nature he strongly felt that the commission should generate public opinion in Case its suggestions were not accepted by the government.

Replying to a question as to what the commission would do if the government created hurdles in its autonomous functioning justice Misra said the commission would then be forced to go public and seek the support of the Press.

Justice Misra said the commission proposed to function with an open mind without any veil of secrecy and would follow all matters to their logical end.

Critics of the commission say the armed and paramilitary forces should be brought under the direct purview of the commission but government says the organizations have their own internal rules and trials for punishing erring personnel.
