MANDI GOBINDGARH: KP.S. Gill, the Director General of the Punjab Police, has said that commandos from Punjab will be deployed in Chamba areas of Himachal Pradesh, Assam and Andhra Pradesh to combat the terrorism and Naxalites menace. Two battalions each of these commands will be deployed only for Jaw and order duty and will have nothing to do with holding of elections.
This decision had been taken following a directive issued by the Union Home Ministry on the request made by these states. The approval of the Chief Minister, Beant Singh had been obtained. The commandos would leave for their destinations within a few days.
The Fatehgarh Sahib police have formed a Police Personnel Shaheed Parivar Welfare Trust, The trust will run a parking lot, at Mandi Gobindgarh proceeds of which will constitute a regular source of income of the trust.
The trust will provide financial assistance to the families of the victim policemen and also scholarships to their wards. Eighteen policemen were killed in Fatehgarh Sahib District.
Gill said that the aim of extending financial help and other facilities to the kin of the victims was to give them a sense of togetherness and to make them feel that they were a part of a larger family.
The DGP laid a wreath at the police martyrs memorial pillar which bears an inscription of the names of all the 18 martyred policemen.
