ISLAMABAD: Pakistan is sending a high-powered delegation of prominent politicians and experienced officials to the 49th session of UN general assembly with the sole purpose of highlighting the Kashmir issue.

Two former prime ministers, several members of Parliament and many senior officials are joining the delegation. The UN session began last week.

“We will raise the dispute with a particular focus on the UN resolutions calling for plebiscite, and human rights violations in the Kashmir Valley at every level in New York,” a senior official said. The delegation will be led by the Foreign Minister, Assaf Ahmad Ali, who went to New York from London last week.

Pakistan’s ambassador in Switzerland, Ahmad Kamal will reach New York in the next couple of days from Geneva.

The key politicians who will reach New York at different times include two former Prime Ministers, Ghulam Mustafa Jatoi and Mir Balakh Sher Mazari, Nusrat Bhutto, Nasrullah Khan, chairman of Parliament’s committee on Kashmir, Hamid Nasir Chattha and another half a dozen MPs.

“This time, our delegation is more high-powered and comprehensive than before because we want [0 take up the Kashmir dispute more vigorously, a senior foreign office source said.

Pakistan has repeatedly declared during the past few months that it will raise the Kashmir issue in the forthcoming UN session.
