CHANDIGARH: Haryana chief minister Bhajan Lal Friday said Chandigarh could be transferred to Punjab provided the Hindi speaking areas of Fazilka, Abohar and 107 villages adjoining Punjab were transferred to Haryana simultaneously.
The Rajiv-Longowal accord and the Indira Gandhi award stipulated the construction of the SYL canal to carry Haryana’s share of water and provision of adequate funds to Haryana for constructing a new capital, he told reporters here.
“If the three conditions are fulfilled Haryana will have no objection to the transfer of Chandigarh to Punjab”, he said. Haryana, along with the rest of the country, was worried at the worsening situation in Punjab and wanted an early solution to the lingering problem, he said.
He said no other area other than Abohar, Fazilka and some 107 villages named in the Longowal accord would be acceptable to Haryana in lieu of Chandigarh.
