WASHINGTON: Dec.7, California Congressman and Khalistan supporter Vic Fazio reiterated his desire for peace in the Punjab with a letter to President Clinton castigating India for its treatment of its people in Punjab, Jammu and Kashmir.
Last month, Fazio, with a group of 24 other Congressmen sent a letter to the president in support of Pete Geren’s House resolution #134 which calls for a plebiscite for Punjab.
They urged the President to “take an active diplomatic role in peace fully resolving the crisis in Punjab, Khalistan.”
The resolution would offer a peaceful resolution to the independence movement, similar to the Israeli Palestine accord. Fazio further notes, “As table South Asia, where the possibility of a nuclear war between Pakistan and India exists, is in our national interest.”
Fazio told the President, “As you may already be aware, in my congressional district both among Indian Americans as a whole, and within our local Sikh community, as well — there is no consensus, but rather a diversity of opinions, regarding India’s internal politics. However, there is a consensus among us regarding the atrocity of the ongoing human rights abuses, and it is in this arena that! Believe we must focus our efforts.
This issue is of paramount importance to me. Therefore, as a member of the Congressional Human Rights Caucus with a longstanding and ongoing interest in the human rights aspect of our foreign policy, l again asks that you give significant consideration to the events taking place in India, as we work toward ending these atrocities and guaranteeing basic human rights for all of India’s people.”
