CALCUTTA: South Africa re tuned to the world sporting arena Friday when its cricketers arrived here to one of the most tumultuous welcome ever accorded to any side in the past hundred years.
The team lead by veteran all-rounder Clive Rice will create history at the magnificent Eden gardens on November 10 when they play their first match after a gap of 21 years against India
Almost every member of the 177 strong entourage was over whelmed by the welcome and when asked about their reaction could only utter “fantastic” or “unbelievable”. The men were accorded a traditional Indian welcome with schoolgirls applying “Tilak”
(vermillion) on their forehead sand another group chanting “welcome South Africa” to the drum beats outside the airport..
“It fantastic to come to India to play an international cricket matches after a gap of 21 years”, skipper Clive Rice said immediately after arrival.
