LONDON: A 35-yrold Indian, Dr. Ashok Kumar, Friday became the first Asian to win a parliamentary by-election in Britain and only the fifth to enter the House of Commons.
Dr. Kumar, who holds a doctorate in fluid mechanics, contested on the opposition labour party ticket, defeating his nearest ruling consternating party candidate, Bats, by neatly 2,000 votes.
Born in Punjab, Dr. Ashok Kumar has been living in Britain since the age of two, and has been a Middleborough councilor for four years from a nearly all white ward.
