CHANDIGARH: An unspecified number of gunmen attacked the Ferozepur-Ludhiana passenger train near Badowal in Ludhiana district around midnight June 15. 49 persons were killed and 30 injured.
Another gang shot dead 27 passengers and injured 17 others in the Dhuri-Hissar train near Qila Raipur in Ludhiana district.
On Friday a day earlier the entire State of Punjab was declared a disturbed area* and army was deployed to assist the civil administration to ensure free and fair elections.
Earlier reports said 125 were killed.

We express our shock and grief at this tragedy. No true Sikh can ever perform such cowardly and shameful act. It is our strong belief that this act Is carried out by an Indian intelligence agency to discredit and’ malign the Sikhs and above ail to avoid electoral process in Punjab in order to block popular mandate of self-determination of the Sikhs.
