NEW DELHI: Polling days will be holidays for both central and state government offices during the Indian general elections.

The provision a normal practice in the past has been made to make it convenient for every voter to exercise her or his right of franchise in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies election commission sources said.

The ministry of home affairs government of India has also been taking similar action in respect of the offices under the administrative control of the central government located in the states.

The sources said the state governments had been requested to declare the day of the poll a public holiday in the coming elections in case the poll day did not fall on a Sunday or a public holiday already declared as such under the negotiable instruments act.

This would enable the working classes to get sufficient opportunity to exercise their franchise.
