VARANASI: At least 40 people were injured when a Rightwing Bharatiya Janata Party meeting to be addressed by film star Shatrughan Sinha was stoned by miscreants in this Hindu holy city in India’s most populous state Uttar Pradesh Saturday after which some people were reportedly stabbed.

Police fired in the air to chase away the stone-throwing mob at Beniabagh area.

Official sources said when the slogan-shouting mob was chased away by the police it went to the rooftops of adjoining buildings and started throwing stones.

The police and the CRPF whose services were commissioned fired several rounds in the air to chase away those who had gathered on the roof-tops of nearby houses and were pelting stones at the meeting.

Police later said the situation had been brought under control They said the trouble started when some anti-social elements raised anti BJP slogans at the meeting and indulged in stone-throwing.
