UNITED NATIONS: Major General Gunther Greindl of Austria was Wednesday formally appointed as chief military observer to head the United Nations peace-keeping force in Kuwait and Iraq the UNIKOM. General Greindl 52 earlier served as commander of the United Nations force in Cyprus for nine years from 1981
The selection was made by the secretary general and approved by the members of the Security Council.
The composition of the 1400 member force the UN Iraq Kuwait observer mission (UNIKOM) has not yet been announced but sources said it would be drawn from five permanent members of the Security Council the United States the Soviet Union China Britain and France Among other countries represented would be Australia Denmark Ghana Nepal and Fiji.
Meanwhile Eric Suy appointed to undertake a fact finding mission to northern Iraq where allegations have been made of repression of Kurds by Iraqi forces is expected Teach Baghdad before the end of the week to begin his mission.
