Following is the schedule announced on Friday for the midterm elections to the lower house of the Parliament and five states and one union territory in May 1991.
Date of issue of notification: April 14, Last date for filing nominations: April 26. Scrutiny: April 27. Last date for withdrawal of candidatures: April 29. Dates of Polls: May 20,23 and 26. Date of completion: May 31.
State assemblies going to polls along with the Lok Sabha are Kerala, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Haryana, Tamil Nadu and union territory of Pondichery.
NEW DELHLI: In reply to persistent questioning on the subject, Mr.Seshan again read out the center’s communication to the commission “that the government has taken a view that elections to the state legislative assembly (of Assam and Punjab) may be held along with elections to the Lok Sabha”.
The home secretary’s letter further said “I am, therefore, desired lo request you to kindly take necessary steps for holding elections to the state legislative assembly in Assam (and Punjab).
He said there were three possibilities still open—to hold simultaneous elections next month, or hold them immediately thereafter or hold them some weeks or months later.
He said the press note was clear and he had taken the decision of announcing the dates for Punjab and Assam elections later under the powers vested upon him by the article 324 of the constitution (superintendence, control and conduct of elections).
He said the press note issued Friday was a “sine qua non” for a poll to be held on May 20 if the notification is not issued on April 19,
