MADRAS: The Indian attitude towards sport should not merely be one exemplifying the motto that it was participation than winning that was more important but one that sought to realise the goals through perseverance and competitiveness the former Indian tennis ace Vijay Amrithraj said.
“Sport should be a form of communication and if that is actively pursued it can ease the stress caused in the playing arena by the lack of it” he said
Vijay was replying to questions at a function organised here by the Indian Christian Association to felicitate him on his re-election as President of the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) Players’ Council coaches. Despite the lack of such support in India Vijay had risen to become one of the top players internationally.
Mr Rayan Amal Raj Tamil Nadu Sports Journalists Association President said it was not winning that mattered with Vijay but the way he conducted himself and one of the all-time tennis great players Arthur Ashe himself had called him the nicest guy in tennis.
Mr David O’Meara coach Brittania Amrithraj Tennis (BAT) scheme here said winners and champions could be set apart by their character which Vijay had in abundance The BAT too strived to develop character in its trainees which would endure forever he said.
A memento was also presented to Vijay on the occasion.
