NEW DELHI: India will be sending emergency supplies of food and medicines to Iraq in the next few days.

India’s offer to deliver the essential supplies for people of Iraq was made by Prime Minister Chandra Shekhar to the Iraqi president Saddam Hussein’s special envoy Mr Nizar Hamdoon.

According to an official spokesperson the prime minister during his 30-minute meeting with Mr Hamdoon permanent undersecretary of state inquired about the health and welfare of shi’ite religious leader Ayatollah Khoiand offered to give assistance in terms of medical treatment in consideration of the clergyman’s advanced age.

Mr Chandra Shekhar expressed hope that necessary measures will be taken by the Iraqi government to ensure the health and welfare of the Ayatollah.

The ongoing deliberations in the United Nations on the Persian Gulf question also figured in the discussions. The two leaders exchanged views on the emerging situation in the Gulf after the end of the war.

The special envoy that arrived on a daylong visit will hold talks with deputy minister for external affairs Digvijay Singh and the foreign secretary Muchkund Dubey before leaving New Delhi.

A Kuwaiti special envoy had visited New Delhi earlier this month.
