NEW DELHE: India’s population has now reached 844 million the census of India 1991 has provisionally estimated.
The increase in absolute terms over the decade is 161 million which is little more than the population’ of Japan the register general and census commissioner of i Mr A.R.Nanda told a press briefing here Monday.
The decennial population growth from 1981 to 1991 works out to about 23.5%.
Males outnumber females by over 31 million.
The growth rate also shows a sex ratio of 929 females per thousand males.
The density of population has been found to be 267 per square kilometer.
