ISLAMABAD: The preliminary prototype of Pakistan’s indigenous main battle tank Al-Khalid will be handed over to the army for trial in June this year according to the army chief Mirza Aslam Beg.

Addressing the annual conference of the commanding officers of different units of the armored corps regiment at Nowshera in the North West Frontier Province he said production of the tank was expected to commence in 1993.

Beg said the army’s indigenous production programs had started yielding results and claimed that the day was not far when dependence on foreign countries in this regard would totally come to an end.

He said the Pakistan army was fully prepared tuned and trimmed to meet all threats posed to the country’s territorial integrity meanwhile Pakistani daily “The News” a publication of the Jang group Sunday said the Pakistan institute of nuclear science and technology had made a major breakthrough in defence technology.

Quoting highly placed sources the daily said the institute had developed laser range finder artillery range finder laser threat sensor and driver’s night sight.

It sail the first indigenously made tank range finder would be displayed at the armed forces parade on March 23.
