NEW DELHI: The Indian government has said it will spare no effort to secure fair compensation for the victims of the 1984 Bhopal gas tragedy and announced that major initiative to protect the environment were on the Anvil.
Addressing to two houses of Parliament president Ramaswamy Venkataraman said providing effective relief to the victims of the gas tragedy -believed to be the world’s worst industrial disaster in which some 2500 people were killed -was an important task before the government.
He also said that a ten year national forestry action plan had been prepared with emphasis on people’s participation and added that a conservation strategy was being formulated to form an integrated framework for development planning.
The president said that the policy on prevention and abatement of pollution would promote technological inputs and preventive measures for waste minimization.
Environment friendly products would be identified and their manufacture and use encouraged the president said.
The concept of civil liability would be codified to help provide relief to those who suffered from environmental damage Venkataraman added.
