CHANDIGARH: Twenty-six people including a senior Akali Dal (Mann) leader eight militants and three security personnel were killed while 11 militants were arrested along with large quantity of arms and ammunition in Punjab Feb 22.
In a fierce encounter in village Chaujian in Tarn Taran police district three security personnel two militants including an area commander of the Khalistan Commando Force and one civilian were killed Friday.
The encounter work place when security forces on a tip off encircled a house where four militants were hiding. The militants opened fire and threw grenades on the security personnel killing DSP (CRPF) Bishamber Singh on the spot while sub inspector Niranjan Singh Havildar Major Singh and an unidentified civilian succumbed to their injuries in the hospital.
The militants tried to escape but they were again engaged in encounter in which two of them were killed. They were identified as Pooran Singh Fauji a former army personnel and area commander of the Khalistan Commando Force and Hardip Singh who last year deserted the railway police as constable and joined the militants to loot the railway armory in Ferozepore.
Balbir Singh Chamaru president of the Akali Dal led by Simranjit Singh Mann was shot dead by the militants at his residence in Patiala district Friday.
One intruder from across the border was killed in the Khem Karan Sector reports said.

Meanwhile Amritsar district police Chief Sanjeev Gupta told reporters that five policemen including a head constable who were working for the Bhindranwale Tigers Force of Khalistan (BTFK) had been detained for interrogation.
Gupta said their gang was busted after two policemen were caught by security forces when they robbed a scooter from a person last week. The involvement of the policemen has so far been proved in killing of pro-Hindu activists Satpal a dacoity and some thefts of scooters motor cycles and extortions he added.
The arrested have been identified as head constable Avtar Singh constables Nirver Singh Sahib Singh and Balwinder Singh all belonging to Amritsar police district and constable Dilbagh Singh of Majitha police district.
