NEW DELHI: The Dalai Lama is not expected to engage in any political activity while he isin India it was officially stated here.
A foreign office spokesman said in reply to questions that the Indian position towards the Dalai Lama had not changed.
He said New Delhi had always recognized Tibet as an autonomous region of China.
India had given Asylum to the Dalai Lama as he was respected here He had a large following of Buddhists throughout the world and was respected as a religious leader of great eminence. There were also old cultural ties between India and Tibet.
Our understanding is that the Dalai Lama is not expected to engage in any political activity while he is in India the spokesman said.
He refused to comment on to a query on the turning down of a visa by Nepal to enable the Dalai Lama to visit that country. A visa is the prerogative of any sovereign government the spokesman said.
