COLOMBO: At least 26 Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) militants and nine Sri Lankan soldiers were killed in two major encounters between government forces and Tamil militants in northeastern Sri Lanka Feb 8 military officials said here. Twenty six LTTE militants were killed and 58 injured at Kankasanturai in the northern Jaffna Peninsula on Wednesday when they tried to overrun a military camp at a cement factory there. The army retaliated with a massive offensive supported by the air force.
