CALCUTTA: Dibyendu Barua became a chess grandmaster only the second Indian to do so after Vishwanathan Anand.
Barus achieved the coveted distinction by defeating Chinese grandmaster Ye Rongguang in the final round of the Duncans Super Grandmasters’ Chess Tournament here securing the third GM norm.
‘Anand got the GM title in 1988.
After his draw against GM A Shneider of Soviet Union in the penultimate round Barva needed nothing less than a victory against Rongguang.
Barua playing with black pieces against Shneider adopted the English opening and both the players agreed to a quick draw in just 12 moves.
