ISLAMABAD: Pakistan President Ghulam Ishaq Khan said Pakistan was negotiating for two nuclear plants a 900 MW plant from France and 300 MW plant from China for peaceful purposes of developing energy resources.

Inaugurating the national power control center here the President said nuclear power represented a long-term viable solution to Pakistan’s energy problems reports QNA.

He said the construction of these nuclear power plants would save the country about 1.7 million tonnes of oil per year or about $375 million at current prices.

The cost of nuclear fuel for the two plants would be about $50 million resulting in a net saving of over $300 million per year he said.

The President said the government had initiated work on a number of “infrastructure projects” which would give the country the capacity to design and build its own nuclear reactors by the end of the decade.
