NEW DELHI: The imposition of president rule in Tamil Nadu Wednesday night evoked strong reactions from political parties.

CPI (M) general secretary E.M.S. Namboodaripad said the president rule imposition was against all cannons of constitutional provisions and was exactly what was objected to in the Sarkaria Commission.

The former minister of state for external affairs and Congress-l leader Prof K.K.Tiwari welcomed the decision saying the security and integrity of the nation was being compromised with the open connivance of the Karunanidhi government.

The CPI secretary Homi F. Daji described the action as “most uncalled for” and “Partisan”.

The imposition of president rule ‘was meant to serve the interest of the Congress-I party and one more proof was that the Chandra Shekhar government was only “proxy of the Congress”.

The BJP general secretary K.L.Sharma said “it is essential for the center to come out with a proper explanation as the prime minister has been saying that there is no question of imposition of president rule in Tamil Nadu”.

He said it was essential that the government should have clarified its position vis-a -vis its involvement in the activities of LTTE.

“But I think that the action to impose the president rule should have been taken very cautiously” he added.

Meanwhile the National Front leaders Wednesday met the president R. Venkataraman and appealed to him not to dismiss the DMK government in Tamil Nadu.

At a 20 minute meeting with the president the national front leaders said the dismissal without sufficient cause of a duly elected government would set a “bad precedent”.

Apart from Bommai the National Front leaders who met Venkatraman were ; VP. Singh Ajit Singh Madhu Dandavate (J.D.) Upendra (Telegu Desam) K.P. Unnikrishnan (Cong-S) and ‘Goswami (AGP).
