NEW DELHI: The federal Govt Wednesday night dismissed the 25 month-old DMK government headed by M Karunanidhi in Tamil Nadu and imposed president’s rule in the state.
The cabinet committee on political affairs decided to impose president rule The meeting which was chaired by the premier Chandra Shekhar followed by a cabinet meeting.
The Tamil Nadu governor Surjit Singh Barnala who was summoned to Delhi met the prime minister this afternoon.
According to official sources the Tamil Nadu government was dismissed following breakdown of law and order in the state with the increasing activities of the Sri Lankan Tamil militant group LTTE in the state.
The DMK government the sources said had indulged in systematic oppression of opposition political parties. Recurrent communal trouble in the state was also among the reasons for dismissal of the government the sources said.
The DMK government headed by M Karunanidhi came to power.
This is the fourth time that the Tamil Nadu government has been dismissed by the center
And for Karunanidhi this is the second time since Jan 301976 that his DMK government has been dismissed. Earlier in 1976 the then Congress-I government headed by Indira Gandhi dismissed his at the government at height of the emergency rule. It was revoked on June 28 1977.
