NEW DELHI: Guru Nanak Dev University retained their supremacy in the north zone inter-university hockey championship here. They topped the four-team round robin league by winning all the matches.

In their concluding match they defeated Punjab Agricultural University Ludhiana by a solitary goal. They ended with six points followed by three each by the

PAU and Delhi while Jamia Milia secured two There was no scoring in the first half in which GND were awarded two penalty corners Off the first Manpreet Singh’s shot was blocked by goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh while the other too fizzled out.

There was another chance when following a cross from the right in Sarbjit moved close to the target but failed to prove finishing touches to the cross. Balwant made another scoring attempt before ends were changed but the ball went out of the pads of Gurpreet.

On resumption Guru Nanak Dev University were awarded another penalty corner and Manpreet Singh’s shot was possession and shot home the winning goal.

The exchanges were marred when Sudhir Malhotra of PAU and Manpreet were involved in a scuffle and both were ordered out for as long as 20 minute each.

PAU made efforts to save the day but a penalty corner hit by Charan Kanwal Singh was intercepted and another by Harminder Singh went wide.
