NEW DELHI: India on Jan 11 rejected the Pakistani proposal for a regional nuclear test ban treaty on the ground that it was not at all relevant to the compulsory test ban treaty.
The spokesman of the external affairs ministry said India believed that the nuclear issue should be tackled on the basis of a global framework. We don’t accept the contention that it can be dealt with in a bilateral or in a south Asian regional context he added.
Pakistan’s representative at the United Nations had said that Islamabad was ready to make a joint declaration with India renouncing the manufacture or acquisition of nuclear weapons and enter into a regional nuclear test ban treaty.
Pakistan was also willing to conclude a bilateral agreement with India for mutual inspection of nuclear facilities the representative said at a conference or treaty banning nuclear tests.
