LUCKNOW: Parts of Lucknow were Jan 1 placed under indefinite curfew following incidents of violence in which six police personnel were injured while other riot-hit areas in Uttar Pradesh including Aligarh reportedly remained peaceful.

Some areas under the Saadatganj police station in Lucknow were placed under indefinite curfew after mobs indulged in brick batting at the Akhari gate.

One circle officer one police sub-inspector and four constables were injured when the rival groups protesting police searches in the area pelted stones at a police party an official spokesman said.

The spokesman said one was looted and one bus damaged in the violence.

The decision to conduct searches for explosive material in the Akbari Gate area followed a bomb blast in a place of worship Monday night he said.

In Aligarh curfew was relaxed for four hours Tuesday. With the recovery of one more body in the Bhojpuri area toll in the recent communal violence in the town has risen to 75.

Meanwhile curfew in Meerut was completely lifted Tuesday.
