GUWAHATI: The army arrested the president of the United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA) and 25 other militants from several parts of the Assam since Dec 23.
One militant, reportedly chosen as the ULFA president at a meeting in Gohpur on October 13, was arrested by the army from Sonitpur district, while two hardcore ULFA militants were arrested from Jorhat, an official spokesman told newsmen here Monday.
Another suspected hardcore militants with some pamphlets was nabbed from Tinsukia district while 13 guns buried in a bag were un earth red and 39 improvised explosive devices besides 120 bags of explosives were recovered from Dhemaji district, the spokesman said,
A group of All Assam Student Union (AASU) leaders, including, Atul Bora and Samujjal Bhatta charjee, president and general secretary of AASU were detained in an army camp at Joypur in upper Assam for 14hours till midday Monday.
Bora told newsmen that each of the AASU leaders was interrogated by army officers in a bid to find out possible clues about the militants.
