ONTARIO: The Security Council has authorized sending about 1,300 armed police and military personnel, many from Canada in ‘an attempt to help restore democracy to Haiti. About 100 armed RCMP officers, all volunteers, are to spearhead the U.N. operation. The U.N. mission will be the first overseas assignment in which the RCMP will carry weapons for their own protection, something they were not told to do even in the former Yugoslavia. Boutros Ghali is also appointing special advisor to coordinate security for the U.N. team.
