WASHINGTON: Clinton Administration’s failure to persuade ‘China not to supply nuclear warheads to Pakistan, has left everyone frustrated. Nobody knows how to deal with Chinese unwillingness to accommodate US concerns, according to State Dept. official,
The US concerns revolve around China’s cooperation with Pakistani missile and nuclear programs as well as the sale of anti-ship cruise missiles and equipment making chemical weapons to Iran, US advocates nonproliferation of nuclear technology.
The differences surfaced when US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Mr, Robert Einhorn, during a recent meeting in Beijing, failed to seek commitment from Chinese counter party to halt such cooperation with both Islamic countries, according to a US policy maker.
To add fuel to the fire, next month’s high Level meeting between US and Chines defense officials in Washington has even cancelled, bringing ‘both nation, at collision course, President Clinton is again confronted ‘with a Question of imposing trade and ‘other economic sanctions in order to bring China in line with US policy.
