NEW DELHI: The Union Minister for Human Resource Development, Arun Singh, and Dec.1 requested the mass media to extend utmost cooperation in focusing the attention of the public on the nation “Education for all” (EFA) summit to be hosted by India during the middle of this month. Addressing the editors, columnists, senior journalists drawn from all over the country, he said the nine participating countries were those with high population and would be the “theaters of tomorrow’s world.” The National Literacy Mission had made it possible for the country to cross the 50% rate in literacy (according to 1991 census) but there were good and bad patches, he said.
Union Education Secretary said the perspectives from international agencies would be available for discussion during the summit The UNICEF, UNESCO and UNFPA, sponsors of the summit, will be fully involved with the preparation of documents and doing the spadework along with the Union Ministry. Earlier, Narendra, Principal information Officer, welcomed the gathering.
The nine countries participating in the summit are: Bangladesh, Brazil, China, Egypt, India, Indonesia, Mexico, Nigeria and Pakistan, this together account for 75% of the world’s literates and over 50% of the world’s population. The summit will begin on Dec.15. Ata discussion held on Dec.1 a number of suggestions were put forward by media representatives.
