JALANDHAR: The detention of Akali leaders and workers rose to 32, on Dec.5 in the continuing police crackdown which began on Sunday evening, in a bid to prevent the Akali Dal (Badal), from reviving the agitation it had called off last month on the sacrilege issue at Gujjararwal in Ludhiana district on Sept 15.

After arresting the senior vice president from his residence in Wadala village at 8:30 p.m., the police raided the house of Akali Dal (B) leaders in various parts of the district. Among the arrested persons are, party’s Sahakot president Charan Singh, general secretary Charanjit Singh, Bhog pur president Banth Singh and Nakodar secretary Charanjit Singh.

While the city police arrested Mohar Singh from Housing Board Colony, the Phillaur police arrested Pargal Singh, BalharSingh and Harjinder Singh from their respective villages. Nihang Kartar Singh and Milkha Singh were arrested from Shakot and Chanchal Singh and Mohan Singh from Banga. Harcharan Singhand Amar Singh was taken into custody from villages Bhatnuraand Kataridi respectively. While the ‘police are continuing with their arrests, several second line Leaders have gone underground 10 organize the demonstration on Tuesday. The Jalandhar district President Sawrup Singh gave a Slip to the police and went underground. The Akali Dal (BY has decided to. launch an agitation protesting against the Congress government’s anti-people and anti-farmer policy. The party has chalked out a plan to demonstrate in front of district headquarters.

At Jalandhar, the party is organizing to put-up massive show by assembling about 25, 00) people.

However, a police spokesman said that the Akalis would not be allowed to demonstrate.
